Closed-Building Radon Testing Instructions
For Current Homeowners and Tenants
CNHInspections has been hired to perform a radon test at your home. To ensure valid and accurate test results—and to avoid the need for a re-test at additional cost—the following closed-building conditions must be strictly followed, as required by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services Radon Division.

🕒 Before the Test
-
Close all exterior windows and doors at least 12 hours before the test begins, and keep them closed for the entire testing period. (Normal use of doors for entry and exit is allowed.)
-
If the home has an active radon mitigation system, it must be operating for at least 24 hours prior to testing and remain on throughout the test.
✅ General Closed-Building Conditions:
-
Windows: Must be closed on all levels, including untested areas.
-
Exterior doors: Must be closed on all levels, except for brief entry/exit.
-
Garage doors: Keep closed except for momentary entry/exit.
-
Do not disturb the test device at any time during the test.
✅ Heating & Cooling:
-
Thermostats: Set heating/cooling systems to normal occupied temperatures (65–80°F).
-
Window AC units: Allowed only in recirculation mode (no outside air).
🚫 Do Not Operate:
-
Whole-house fans
-
Fireplaces, unless used as the primary heat source
-
Ceiling or portable fans that blow toward the testing device
-
Window fans — must be removed or sealed closed
⚠️ Use with Caution:
-
Clothes dryers, range hoods, bathroom fans: Limit use to avoid excessive air exchange.
-
Fireplace dampers: Keep closed if practicable.
⚠️ Important Note
Radon monitors used by CNHInspections contain built-in tamper detection systems.
If these testing guidelines are not strictly followed, the results will be invalid, and a second test (at additional cost) will be required.
