Vermiculite Insulation: Is Removal Necessary?

Vermiculite is a lightweight, pebble-like insulation that was commonly installed in the attics and walls of older homes. It is usually gray-brown or silver-gold and may be present beneath insulation added later, such as blown-in cellulose.
A mine near Libby, Montana, supplied much of the vermiculite insulation sold in the United States and was contaminated with asbestos. Because Libby vermiculite was widely used, the EPA recommends assuming vermiculite insulation may contain asbestos and leaving it undisturbed.
Is Removal Necessary?

Why Disturbance Matters
Asbestos exposure can cause serious diseases, including lung cancer and mesothelioma, and there is no known safe level of exposure. Because the fibers must become airborne and be inhaled, the most important step is to avoid disturbing vermiculite insulation. The risk increases with repeated or prolonged exposure, and related diseases may not appear until decades later.
What Should Homeowners Do?
The primary concern is disturbing the insulation and releasing asbestos fibers into the air. Vermiculite should not be dug through, moved, or handled, and the attic should not be used for storage.
Contractors should be informed about the vermiculite before performing electrical, HVAC, insulation, roofing, or remodeling work that could disturb it.
When remodeling or renovation work may disturb vermiculite insulation in an attic or walls, hire a licensed asbestos contractor to ensure the material is safely handled or removed.
Finding vermiculite insulation does not automatically mean the home is unsafe or that immediate removal is required. In many cases, leaving it undisturbed is the recommended approach.
